BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF JOHN EDGAR HOOVER
DIRECT I, FEDERAL 3UREAY OF INVSSTIGATION
UNIT£ED STATES DEPAATMENT OF JUSTICE
March 1, 1950
John Edgar Hoover was born January 1, 1895, tn the District
of Columbta. He was educated tn the public schools of the District of
Columbia and received LLB and LLM Degrees from George Washington
University. He holds Honorary Degrees from George Washington Untuersity,
Pennsylvania Military College, New York Untuersity, Drake University,
Westminster College, Oklahoma Saptist University, Georgetown University,
Notre Dame Untuersity, St. John's Untuersity Law School, kutgers
University, the Untversity of Arkansas, Seton Hall College and Holy
Cross College. He holds an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Sctence
from Kalamazoo College and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Civil
Law from the University of the South.
Mr. Hoover entered the Department of Justice in 1917, and in
1919, was appotnted Special Assistant to the Attorney General. From
1921 until 1924 he served as Assistant Director of the Bureau of
Investtgation and in May, 1924, he was named Director.
Ur. Hoover ts a member of the Masontc Order; Kappa Alpha
Fraternity; Omicron Delta Kappa; Delta Theta Phi; Alpha Phi Omega,
and Zeta Sigma Pi. He ts a member of many national and state-wide
law enforcement associations,
He ts a trustee of the George Washington Untversity; a trustee
of the National Presbyterian Church; member of the S3oard of Directors
of the Central Dispensary and Bmergency Hospital, Washington, D. C.3
Bi, menber of the Board of Directors of the Boys' Clubs of America; and a
member of the National Committee on Public Relations of;the Boy Scouts
of America. . °
He has been admitted to practice law before the bar of
the District Court of the United Statee for the Diatrict of Columbia, -
the United States Court of Claims, and the United States Supreme Court,
On March 8, 1946, Mr. Hoover was presented the Medal of Mertt
. by the President of the United States.
On October 27, 1949, Mr. Hoover was awarded the "Theodore
Roosevelt Distinguished Serutce Medal" by the Roosevelt Memortal
Assoctation,
