I, like many other Senators, was very disappointed
the pay raise Bill recommended by the Mouse Civil Service GOT,
there was & most unfortunate under-evaluation of the rele played
by the able Direoter of the Federal Mareau of Investigation, Mr. J.
Edgar Moover. Under that Count ttee Bill, Mr. Moover’s salary
would have been increased from $14,000 to $15,000 a year, a “raise”
of approximately 7%, although Cabinet Members’ salaries were te be
increased by approximately 66£ end many Under-Secretarios and the like
, .
were to recoive Jumps up to 100%.
Jt fs most enheartening that the full Mouse asted teday to
increase Mr. Hoover's pay to $17,800, although even thet figure wight
be questioned as to whether or mot it is fully eoumensurate with his
worth.
While Mr. “oover's position is technieally aot as high in
the Adsinistretive hierashy ef Goverhuent as that of a Gabinet office:
there is absolutely mo somparison between the relative importance
of his position and that of virtually eny‘other individsal beleg
the White House level in the Executive Branch of Jovermuent.
Mr. Moover's vital role in protecting the national secwity
from subversive individuals and groups as well as protesting the
national health and safety from lawless individwals is se well mom
and so incomparebly valuable as not to require rgpetitiquns ji,
