Mr. Kenneth Shaffer, Chief Clerk, Washincton Field Office,
telephonically advised that while serving as Assistant Chief Clerk oo
during the Summer of 1972, he was involved in a project concerned with
destruction of a great deal of persona] correspondence which had been
delivered to the Washington Field Office by employees in that division.
i was his understanding the materia! had been designated for destruction
by Miss Helen Gandy and had been sent from Mr. Hoover's office and also
from Mr. Hoover's residence.

Following delivery of material to the loading dock at the Washington
Field Office, it was delivered to the Chief Clerk's Office and placed ina
secure space for eventual destruction in the shredding machine. He was
personaly never made aware of any books or interesting case write-ups
which had been delivered from Mr. Hoover's house and designated for the
External Affairs Division. .
