SECURITY (R) Dear Sir: . For the information of all offices receiving this cummunication, the above-captioned title is the code word utilized by the Bureau to report investigation involving the ALGER HISS - JAY DAVID WHITTAKER CHAMBERS, Perjury - Espionage (R) investigation. It will be recalled that the recently concluded trial of ALGER HISS for perjury resulted in a hmg jury. The retrial of this matter is now scheduled for October, 1949. Assistant Director EB. J. Connelley has reiterated the following instructions which must be observed by all offices conducting investigation in this case, US ee ek 1. Each office receiving this letter should contact appropriate confidential informants who might have information on the Communist activities and associates of ALGER HISS during the middle and late 1930ts, It is felt that the recent, nation-wide publicity accorded the Hiss trial may have refreshed the recollection of former Communist Party members now utilized by the Bureau as informants, and it is believed that the possibility exists that one or more of these informants may be able to furnish information reflectins: the alleged Communist activity of ALGER HISS. ‘ 2- All offices which have conducted investigation in this matter shold immediately review their files and submit all information previously developed and not reported in a report form, . 36 New York, as.Office of Origin, should receive three copies of all investigative reports.
