CHAMBERS never knew PETER'S true identity; however, after he
broke with the Soviets in 1938, he had a long conversation with General
ERIVITSEY in late April 1938. After furnishing KRIVITSKY with all his
descriptive data concerning PETER, KRIVITSKY stated that PETUR was PORTS
BYKOV. This was not a positive identification but was probably a fairly
zood one since both CHAMBERS and ERIVITSEY were only out of the service of
the Soviets a short tine.
CHAMBERS described PRTER as follows:

quick in his movements, probably wore reading
glasses, not cocky or conceited but definitely
authoritative in his manner, had a ferret—lLike
way about hin.
Peculiarities: Invariably carried right hand inside his
jacket or overcoat (Napoleon style)

accent, spoke very poor English when he first
