Re Philedelphia letter to the Bureau, attention FBI Laboratory,
of Jul2-51,
fs the Bureau is eware, and for the definite information of the
Philedelphia Office, exhibit K-35, a letter of DAISY FANSLER to Miss EMMA tL.
HELLINGS of the Philedelphia Free Library wes forwarded by the FBI Laboratory
to the New York Office at the commencement of the first trial of ALGER HISS,
and in turn it was turned over to SAAG Thomas J. Donegan for use es a trial
exhibit es a know specimen of the typing of the Woodstock typewriter owned
by the HISSES. This exhibit remains in the possession of Mr. Donegen.
fg the Bureau is avare, and for the information of Philedelphie, in-
quirtes are being made even at this date by individuels who represent then~
selves es investigators for ettorneys of ALGER HISS. The current line of their
inquiries appears to be devoted to en effort to disprove that portion of the
Government's case which established that the questioned documents were typed
by the same typewriter as typed the known specimens. It would thus appear
thet at any date some new lesel maneuver micht be utilized by HISS' attorneys
ian en effort to obtein a rehearing of this case. Since en exhibit such as
K-35 would te of immediate need and value to the Government attorneys in de-
fending such an action, it is felt thet this exhibit should remain in the hanés
of Government attorneys for the present tine.
