Re: JOHN L, LEWIS, ET AL Agents cre ET at his home, ay Street, Springfield, Illinois, in the presence of his wife and daughter he advised he has no criminal record. He appeared to be very cooperative end secmed to be well versed with union activitios. Hc also appeared to be honest and unbiased and is believed to be an individual who would make a very good witness. The following signed statement was obtaincd tron Jin Springfie d August 26, 1943. who are known to me to Speciol Agents of the Fodoral gation, United States Department of Justice. No threats or promises have been made me and this statement is true and correct. my father when I was about ¥ joined the United Hine Sorkers Union at Pittsburgh, Kansas and was a member till 193¢ when I joinec the Progressive Mine Zorkers of Amorica, Between i 1932, off and on, 7 wes a member of the Pit Committee. I have dion Mine B for about years and worked there in 1932, In 1932 I joined the Progrcssivo bocause I was not getting any bencfits from the UM™, and my sister nover got any death benefits for tho death of her husband, In 1932 I went with PMs when they had thcir vote but I hud ncething to do with its election. Between 1932 and 1937 I huve no knowledge as to whether or Elshoff favored enc union over another. ~~ "Ther: wos no trouble at Mine B from 1932 to 1937. During this time everyone was satisfusicd with PEA and no ono triod to cause them any trouble, Betreen 1932 and 1937 I know of no attempts of anyone to try to swing the men back to UM: from PA. I end others thought that the PRA leaders wors honest and thit it was not being run by wrong men. The PNA was run then by the membors and not by 2 few picked men. Botweon 1952 and 1937 I wos cctive in the FPA union and did attend some of their mectings. I still don't think that all of thosc PMA men were guilty of those bombings and this was the gencral foaling among the members. PMA officials always mide an honest report of dues, asscssments etc, and we always know where all the money went to. I nsver suspected any PA officials as being crooks or making pay-offs to outsiders, - 17 - aed a ee 2 nn oe. i ee ee aE as ee ae eal a
