Re: JOHN L. LEvIs, ET AL
f <)
INTERVIE. WJTH “During the period 1932 to 1937 when the Mina B closed
ns UM’ persons did picket the mine on different occasions.
ontinucd On several times UMM men did bring out literature but
they wers kicked out from the mine. Even tho PMA had
control over the mince UM men wcre allowed to come into tho mince and they
talked te PMA men and tried to have them join the UM. These mon were
imrorted as they were strangers.
"I know JOE ALPANNSE, Androw Schrslevious, Dominic Pssquals, Pete
Cartor, Frank Austin, Tony Flotch, John (Cotton) _Ananios, “John Sirtout (Che
is now in U.S. Army), Geo. Jacaway, Emory Jac Jcesway, Charles Bohannon and
domes Exle as being men vho worked at Mine B and although thoy wcrc members
of Ff. tho rumor and gossip 2round the minc was that all of them were being
peid by Ul, and vere telling UM’ what was going on among the PMA men. They
never contactcd mc regarding my changing over as they knew that I did not
like them or UM. I don't kmow of any relations betweon management of
wine E and UMy.
j an officisl of PMA, told us at meeting in 1937 that the
men shoul ontinuc to work on altho the contract had expired and and that
if there would be any inercase It would be paid back and that we would
continues to get the samc wage were were getting.
“ic felt that there would be no advantage in going over to UMW
from PM. because of pay or wage acjustments, Altho we wore working without
a contract in April, 1937, all miners were satisfied with their weges and
no one complained about them ind there were no slow downs or stoppages there
at that time either,
"Before the Mine B shut down in spring of 1937 the above mentioned
men would go around and talk with the PMA mincrs and tell them to join the
US. and also told them that if they were cischarged from Mines B they could
not get work at any mincs, «at verious tincs some of them would ask mo when
I vas going to join the UN. and I told them to stay away from me as I was
old enough to make up my mind but I did see them talk to other miners,
"The management of B Vino ncvcr told us how they stood on the wage
qucstion and our PKA officials would tell us th:t they hoped to get evcry-
thing settled soon,
"I reeall that in ly, 1937 PMA hcid a rogular mecting and I
attendee the mecting which was att.ndod by © large group ane at this meeting
they expeled five of the above mentioned persons. FMA officials told us
that Those men were trouble makers and thut was why they were being expeled
anc a standing vote was tiken and they «cre expcled, We were told that These
five men were trying to kcep men from going to work in the mine. Some of the
cxpeled men were at the moeting but they had nothing to say.
