"I do not remember going to a PH, meting May 11, 1937. About this
time I knew we were having a little troviie with the company on our wage
seale, and tne Phin cfrics. nis told us they were trying to sign a contract
with the company anc «sv to get a wage increase. J thought the PMA could
gct-us just as much as the Ulat and it didn't make any difference to me
whether UMW or Pk. would try. No one from the company ever talked to us
about the wage troublso that I know about,
"On May 12, 1937, 1 went to work as a di.ger just as usual, I
was dressed but did not go down invo the mnes,-. Tho pit Committee of
PM: was in talking with the company ard they came out and tid us that
there would be no work because the company would not sign the contract.
It was our Pil, leaders who told us this. On Moy 11, 1937 we had gone
down into the mines, and I had loaded two half cars of coal. The reason
I only loaded half cars was that the driver Would pull the cars before

the petition at PM. headquarters. That was the only petition I signed
and I never signed a UMW petition.
"J hoard a ULW local was formed in the sumnacr of 1937, but T

m to join this UMW,
“During the sumer of 1937 the PMA just had ite regular
meetings. I heard of no wildcat meetings going on.
"In the fall of 1937 I read several times in the nowspaper that
