INTERVIE. “ITH "Regarding the reletionship betwoen Elshoff and Locel 54,
fy between Septsmber, 1932 and April, 1937, everything
c went along alright to start with, but about from 1956 on,
Elshoff aeomed to favor the UM. and wanted to deal with
thon and act the PUT. At this time I did not take an activo part in union
affairs euc am unavare of the methods which may have been used by Elshoff
to influence the men to join the UL. I do mow that in January, 1940, after
the minc had re-opened, on threo consecutive days I observod about fourteon
miners, whom 1 knex to be members of the P¥., apply for work in the mine
offices, but were refused with the statement that thore was no work for
them. They were at thet timc members of Local 77, PM. I also observed
thet during the same period, a numbcr of cthor minors wero hirod by the mine,
oll of whom wero mombers of the OWT. ;
. "ss to the rciztions betwoen PM? officials and Pi] minors, I feel
the mombers were satis2izd and felt tho union was being run woll. There
was no eplit in the PE. until the DAY and Elshoff attempted to persuade the
Pit; miners to join the bit-. J say this beccuse several mincrs, whose names
I do not remember, told me that thoy were arproachsd and threatened if they

did not join the DM’. This twas accomplished by bringing in men by UM’ who
pretended to be working, but in reality they spent their time contacting
the miners to get then to join the UM.. Thesc men told the miners they had
better change their minds and join the UMi. Some of these men had not worked
in the mine until the troyble started. Thoir names are oe

*[ith reference to the relationship between Local 54 and UM. from
September 1932 to April, 1957, I do not recoll that UM. hod a picket line
or distributed any literature, but the UM7 did have organigcrs in the
Minc B who I mentioned previously in this statoment. Those organizors worked
harder on ‘on the minere who could not apoak good English and it has been my
