TiTERV io! WITH force wis used and we could fo out and leave as we pleased
and nothing unusual happened. When the Marshall came out
continued we all left and the men did not resent the Marshall as the
men were petting tired of being there so long. I think
the larshall told the men that nobody else would come out and take over.
NT heard several cays later after the Marshall came out that the
s soing to be rcopened but I did not go out. JI remember that in Dec.

to vote any special way and no strong arm methods were used. We first went
to the union hall and then-ent to the Armory to vote in a group. In Jan.
1938 I think I read in the paner thet the mince would be opened but I did
not go out there as we were sat. "ied that the injunction would keep anyone
from the mine property. I knew Bishoff had not signed a contract with the
Prorressives and as I recall it at this time the rumor was that he would
not deal with the Frey ostives beciuse Lewis and UM was paying him to keep
the minc closed. IT ?uiceived a recistered letter telling me to come back to
work in Nov. of 1939, tais Jouter ~a¥e me a certain number of days te report
in, I dont rencmber how many but Zcrant beck the first day and saw Falscetti,
who told me I would heave to wait till my place was ready to work in. No
inguirics were made of me as to which union I belonged to. I went back to
viork shortly after the first of the year of 1940, one of my sons telling
me when my place was rezdy for me to go back in. Nobody c3used me to be
cocked or threatened me in any VAN Chas. Bohanon did tilk to me at
the mine about swinring over to UMi, he said that all the men were joining
and I had better get lined up. Bohenon was very careful what he said,
he aid not threaten me or say I night +t lose my job. No force was used by
reep their men in line as the PUA felt their men were loynl and this
Ws S unnecessiry. I heard at this timc that whenever a new mon was hired or
repliced the nanarement would oniy hire UMW men, I think this is the way
that UL cot a na jority at the mine. I heard that if new men cominr in
were not Uily they would be sirnec up with that union before t hey went to
~ork, this signing up of now men to UMW went on right in the mine yard where
she officiil and everyone could see it, so every ody must have known what
was foing on. During this period I was treated about the same as always
and Elshoff and Faiseetti made no statements to me indicatince that they
favored either union.
