INTERVIEW VITH PLFFERLE stated that it was his understanding that -
L. G, PRFFSRLE. the "people in Washington" wag JOHN L. LEWIS, but

During the conversation Attorney BARBER, according to PEFFERLE,
kidded ELSHCFF about the "man with the heavy eyebrows" , as being the
financial backer of the purchase, To this ELSHOFF never admitted or denied
anything, PEFFERLE stated that the original discussions, considerations
were for all Panther Creek mine properties, but that they also talked about
Panther Creek Auburn Hine No, l.
Ur, PaFFERLE was umable to recall any statement at any later
meetings with £LSSOrF wherein ELSHOFF said that his people in Washington
turned the proposition down. He said that at one time during the con-
ference on June 1l, 1942, when the price auestion was being discussed
that it was his (PEFFORLE's) information that the money was available
to which ELSHOFF replied that he could get the money.
