ai abi understood that this extension carried a clause provjding
for retroactive pay back to April 1, 1937 in the event
fcomeinucey - & Wao increase was granted. All mon who later returned
to Mine B under U.M.u. received this back pay, but those
who did not return to work did not get it.
"The state officors of FMA. on ED 2 <2-re2 our sommittes
that the extension which hac beon sitned with Elshoff, carried a clause
providing for retroactive pay back to April 1, 1937 and this information was
passed on to the members of Local 54, both by our committee and at meetings.
I feol sure that the members of Local 64 felt that tho now contract would
be nexotiated, anc would be as favorable as any other contract secured by
any other local or by U.M.W,.
"At about this time there was a anal] group of men at Mine B,
members of F.M.A., who wore causine some trouble by stating that we would
not vet o new contract nor our rotronctive pay. These men, as I recall
their names, were Bohannon who we called Bowling Groen, Frank Austin,
Dominic Fasquale onc Sammy Albanese. There wos also o follow named ‘Andy,
Tony flotch and perhaps one or two others whosco names J con't recall, These
men werc constantly comins to me saying that we wouldn't zet retroactive
pay, and that we should not work without o contract. They worc tellinc the
miners the same thins but did not appear to have much sucecss in disturbinz
the rest of the mon.
"I do not recall any strikos, lock-outs or shut downs of the mine
between April 1, 1937 anc May 12, 1937,
"I recall that a meeting of the men wis called, this meeting
being held at the minc as I remembor, at which time QE vised the
men that when the new contract was sinned, retroactive Wazcs would be paid
back to April 1, 1937.
"Thore was o lot of meetines held at about this time and I do
not reesll the datcs and purpose of all of thesc meetings.
"I recall that Oscar Faleetti told our committee that ho did not
know of any retroactive clauso in the extension which hac been siened.
"At about this time f-ur or five of the agitators I havo previously
mentioned were oxpclled from r.eM.A. I do not recall teing at thot mooting,
probably wosn't, At any rate, I was not in tho meeting when the action was
taken. As I remembor, it was at a regular neetinz although I can not be
sure, At any rato, I was advised that these men had been expelled, and the
following mornings which was tho day of the strike, the miners refused to go
to work with the men wh>s had been expelled,
