that decorum that besite an mertean trial’ and that defense
counsel had been afforded "every privilege that a lawyer
should expect ina criminal case.?*
With regard to the pretrial publtcity, Judge Ryan
reasoned as follows,
"A reading of the newspaper articles subattted by the
petittoners reveala nothing of an unusual or infloanatory
character. The articles seen but a fatr response to a
legttinate public interest in a natter of vital concern to
Gll. « »« The accounts of the arresta and subsequent indictmenta
of petitioners tended to allay a public anrtety and to give
assurance that those charged with the protection of vital
tnformation were alert and diligent in the performance eof thetr
obltgattone,” |
In further discussing thta point, Judge Byan atated: .
"The trial began on March 6, 1951, shortly less than seven
months aster the arrest of Sobell, the last defendant tobe -
taken tnto custody. Any publte prejudtece whtch might be
ascribed to nevipaper publtctty incident to the arrest of these
defendants had long since been dissipated among the populace of
