Vetterli:«-= This letter-report pertains to the examinations of. ballistic exhibite involved in the Plaza Slayings of June 17th; thie report has deen delayed in order that the results of certain gun examinations could be included. The photographs you have illustrete evidence bullets and cartridge cases, found at the ecene of the crime ani removed from the bodies of the victing. The photographa are numbered and lettered as follows: Cartridge cases: 1 to 8. Bullets: Ato E. A set of these photographs has been | furnished Chief of Detectives Higgins, and Dr. Souder of your Bureau of — ro Standaris. Kicroscope examinations indicate that two Thompson Sub-Machine - guns, a 045 Colt's Automatic Pistol, and another weapon using eteel bell © beerings, Was used in the slayings. It ia quite apparent that your agent, Caffery, mesete od with a Beall bearing while Lackey was shot with a Thompson ¢ eid, Grooms and Nash were shot with a Thompson gun, While 1t ie apparent that Hermanson was shot with a buck-shot gun. Ly conelusions are based upon careful microscope examinations of the ‘ exhibite now in my keeping. Bullet holes in the two cars indicate that the gun-fire came from the front and rear, Bullets and cartridge cases from Floyd's gun, ani from the - Nebreska Bank robbery, and from the North Kanses City benk robbery, as well aa bullets from our Detective Carpenter shooting, all failed to “be identified as being connected with the weapons used in the Plaza shootings. Test bullets fired by me: from,the two .56 caliber Colt's revolwers taken from "Fur" Sammons, failed to be identified as being connected with any local shootings. Spould you take any weapons connect- ing with this case, it ia absolutely important that test tullete be fired from the weapons by me in order thet I can identify positively the comparison slugs es well as the guns. Be sure that no one cleans the guns. Ky laboratory and services are for you to use as you see fit; do not hesitate to call upon me day or night, in the event thet I can be of help to you or your agents. Cordially yours,
