Cheater or his assistant. at Fort Smith, Arkansas, Agents interviewed Sheriff John Le Williams and Deputy Sheriff Prentice ‘hadduz, who edvised that after the Agents arrived et Fort Sith with Mash it appeared to be general knowledge in Fort Smith es to the identity of the prisoner. Nash remined in the County Jail for some time and a number of curious people came to view him, Some time before train time the Agents and their prisoner were driven to the lissouri Pacific Station by Maddux, they having left their car parked adjoining the fail. During their stay a telephone call was placed by Special Agent Smith from the jeil to the Kansea City Cffice,. Kr. Williams advised thet no inquiries were made at his office from . @byone in Hot Springs, Arkansea, and the seme information was given Agent . upon inguiry of Chief of Police Eugh Conner at Fort Smiths Lr, Williams advised that the newspaper reporter who received in- forration relative to tre capture of Kash was William Griffiesa, ear oyed by the only newapaper con>any in Fort Smith. Through inquiry at the newspaper office in Fort Saith, where the newspapers "Southwestern Americen® end “Times Record” are published, it was determined thet William Griffies is at present on his vacation samen where in Louisiana or Texas and will not return to Fort Smith until July SOth.e It was further determined that the Associated Press ren who was emploveéd at Ft. Smith on Juhe léth is Robert Secrest, Jr, and is now visit- inz hie grandmother Urs, J. T. Upchurch, Route 2, Feris, Texas, where he Will be for aane weeks, The present Associated Press man at Fort Smith is his brother, J. Ts Secrest, who wae interviewed and showed hie file ef messazes received and tranazitted reletive to the Nash matter.
