MEMORARIN FOR THE DIRECTOR,
Agent in Charge Purvis catied“from Chicago this morning
relative to the telegram from Frank J “*oesch, received yesterday,
and steted thet he had talked to “r. Loesch yesterday afternoon,
o had placed bim in touch with a man by the name of W. Comfort
hawking, who, in turn, cleims to have an informant who is a member
_ ‘of the Frank Nash gang and is in the counsel of this gang at the
present time. Mr, Yurvis stated that this informant's name was ~
not made mown to him, but Hawkins ateted he believed he could induce
the informant later to contact Purvis. Purvis stated that he received
bo informetion which could be used as evidence but he did receive a
great deal of background informetion which he felt would prove of
considerable value in the further investigation of the Kansas City
shooting. 4e stated that if he could obtain the bullets found at the
scene of the shooting and heave them compered by a ballistics expert at
Chicago he might be able to definitely identify the machine gun used
at Kansas City. This informant cleimed that the machine gun is one
which has been used on two prior occasions in Chicago end that the
police at Chicago have bullets which were fired by that gun on those
occasions, and thus it could be identified. He claims that the gun
is buried now but that just as soon as it comes to light again this
informent will Imow of that fact and probably commmicate the information
through chennels to Purvie. It appears that the informant is desirous
3 of a reteiner of some kind and Furvis will explain the whole matter in
? e letter which he will write the Bureau today. He stated that Mr. Loesch
