Leavenvorth Penitentiary on June 18, 1935 after having served a four .
year term for mail robbery; that while be waa incarcerated in the
penitentiary he had for a short time Frank Nesh ee a ¢cll mate, Tompking
esid also thet he vos well acquseinted with Bob Bredy, Verne Miller, t
Harvey J. Bailey alies J. J. Brennen end William Underhill, former
immates of the Leavenworth Penitentiary and believed to have hed some
eonnection with the Kansas City slaying.
From the atatements of Fred Tompkins, it eppears
that while confined in the Leavenworth Penitentiary, he had numerous
conferences with Ray Caffrey end further, that Ceffrey, well acquainted
with the domestic affeirs of Tompkins, wee in sympathy with him and at
times Caffrey would send a few pieces of clothing and possibly a fev
éollersa to Tompkins’ children. In view of that, setetes Tompkins, he
liked Caffrey immensely and feele now thet if at all possible he would
a

like to esasist the Bureau in putting his finger on the parties responsible .
for the slaying of Rey Caffrey especially. It might de well to state
bere that Tompkins will leter seek to obtain the restoration of his
civil rights and if successful in putting his finger on the trigger-man
in the Kansas City saleying, he will ask the recomenistion of the Bureau
in that regard,
Tompkins stated that if there is any person in the
East who hae knowledge of the present location of Yerne Miller and the
Kenses City mob, it will de a recketeer in Newark, H.J. by the name of
Pete McCarthy. Tompkins atates that some years beck he pulled « bank }
job with Pete McCarthy and one Eddie Stevens, also a racketeer in _—
Nevark, H.J., et Montreal, Canada; that through his criminal activities
with Pete McCarthy and Eddie Stevens a relationship hes grown up which
impels eny of these three individuals, McCarthy, Stevens end Tompkins,
to trust each other. Tompkins felt thet if he could get Pete McCarthy
in the proper atmosphere and drink a few beers with him, he could une
doubtedly find out from McCarthy the present location of Verne Miller
and "the boys.*
Accompenied By Special Agent George J. Starr ef the
Hew York office, Fred J. Tompkins, his brother Ted Tompkins, and Agent
“Manning journied to Newark, N.J. in Ted fompkins' Chevrolet car. Agent
Manning furnished Fred Tompkins with e emall sum of money with which
to purchese « few beers and it was decided et Newark that Tompkins ang
his brother should locate Pete McCarthy and/or Eddie Stevens and have
a chet with them, Neither Manning nor agent Sterr accompenied Tompkins
end Bie brother on their quest to locate and heve « talk with McCarthy
or Stevens. About two hours after the errival of the Tompkins brothere,
Agent Sterr and agent Manning at Newark, the two Tompkins brothers met
Agents Starr end Manning near Park Plece, Newark, and edvised that both
Pete McCarthy and Eddie Stevens were on thet evening attending a fight
