MEJORANDUH FOR THE DIRECTOR.
Agent in Charge Conrey called from Kansas City and stated
thet he had called the Oklahoma City office and ascertained thet
Colvin was still sick and probably would not be in a condition to
report to Kansas City wntil Mondey morning. He suggested that in
the meantime Special Agent Andersen might interview Bailey and Bates
at the penitentiary as Bailey had indicated previously to Andersen .
that he might have something to teli him after he "cooled off", Agent
in Cherge Conroy stated he would also like to use them in the intervening
days on the lead on Underhill. Incidentally on the Underhill netter
he stated that the reason they did not contact him the other night was
because the hotel which they had surrounded had been locked up due
to the fact that the County Judge came into the hotel intoxicated and
the hotel people closed for the night so that they would protect the
Judge. The understanding wes thet Underhill would follow his contact
man into the hotel but the contact man wes never able to get: into
it because of its being closed. Conroy stated he was still in touch
with this source of informetion and felt that they might be able to
neke something more of it.
PLO Ae
I told Conroy that I would give his message to you relative
to the use of Andersen and Turrou but I thought it would be inadvisable
te use thea on the Underhill matter in view of our desire to have then
renain under cover; that, however, I felt it would be satisfactory
for Andersen to interview Bailey and unless he, Conroy, received
word from the Director or the writer this afternoon he might assume
that thet would be 0. K. and that Turrou and Andersen should remain
over in Kansas City until Monday when Colvin would arrive.
Respectfully,
MWilran L~
ve. We Hughes.
