them of the conversation overheard by Mrs, Rogers, It was et this tine
I suggested to Agents Guinane and Keating that we immediately crash Vi's
apertzent, with a view to apprehending Verne Miller, es I was positive
of his icentification; however, no action was taken on this suggestion.
&bout 7:00 P.21,, while I was mainteining surveillance through
the sneéll opening in my door, I observed Bobby Moore coming from dow-
stairs, carrying a large gladstone bag and 4 man's topcost, and proceeded
with seme to Room 211. About fifteen minutes leter, one of the Azents,
whose name J donft recall, reported thet he had observed Miss Moore
teke this grip fran the Ford Coupe, bearing the New York license pletes,
perked in front of the Sherone Apartments, and carry it into the hotel;
thet she subsequently returned and drove the car to 4 parking lot across
the street. It was at this time that I suggested, as a lest resort to
positive identification, that the cer be broken open in en effort to
ascertain if any effects in the automobile would show thet this man was
Verae tiller; however, no action was taken with regard to this suggestion
until late Wednesday afternoon, when Speciel azent J. T. Hartin and a
squed of police officers obteined a key which opened the door of this
yord car and they examined everything in the car. agent Hartin reported
to Special Arent Guinane, in my presence, shortly thereafter, thet the
contents found in t. is car bore no indication that the owner of the car
was Verne ]filler. It was subsecuently discovered, after Millerts escape,
and after a thorugh exanination had been made of the clothes in the
trunk contained in this car, that two of the shirts end one pair of
pajamas bore the initials "V,C.N,".
At 2:00 a.M., Wednesday morning, November 1, 1935, acting Special
&zent in Charge D. 6. Smith reported to Room 207, where six agents and
two police officers were on duty and at this time I again fully discussed
the entire situetion with him and again suggested that we immediately
crash Room 211, because of the fact I was positive that the man in that
room with Vi wes Verne Hiller; however, no action was taken in this
regard and the suggestion wes disregerded.
Up until this time, I wish to state the following reasons why
I thouzht the man in Room 211 with Vi Mathis was Verne Hiller:
(1) My positive identification of Vivien Methis, as the
girl living in Apartment 211.
(2) My 4&lnost positive identification thet this men wes
Verne Miller, inasmuch as the general appearance and
physical description of the man tallied fully with
thet of Verne Miller. —
