JInasmch aa from all indications the deal would go through, the writer wired Agent Brantley at Phoenix to pro- ceed to Little Rock as soon as possible and he arrived there on Sunday morning, Jamary 14, while we maintained conatant vigil waiting for the word, but none was forthcoming. On Sunday night, the writer called Inform- ent "A" by telephone and who advised that he had lest contact; that he, hiuself, was dealing. through a third person’, and that this third person had also lost contact with the fugitive and that he did not know what hed gone wrong. Qn the 15th, the writer, accompanied by Agents Erantley and ander- son, proceeded to Hot Springs where the writer contacted Informant "A" alone and st which time Informent stated that he-had teen epproached by one Ed Spears, residing at 239 orange St., a broken-down confidence man who had always been associated with Galatas. Informant "4a" at this tine claimed that Spears was the same one who had contacted Galatas on the pre- vious occasion; that Speers at that time told him that he had Galatas a short distance from Hot Springs where he would be ssfe for a week and that be was being taken cere of by a Negro woman; that Galatas wae anxious to | surrender, but was afraid to do so ae he knew Division Agents preferred killine him to arresting him. Informant "4" claimed that it was in further- ance of Spears' requests and promises that he had acted; that when the word ceme thet Galatas could surrender to the Government in safety, he so ad- vised Speara who then stated that Galatas had left and could not be reached before Saturday or Sunday; thet from that time on, according to Informant "a", no further contact was made, elthough Spears claims to have received a telegram from Clarksdale, Mississippi, signed Joe Baker, and Spears cleima thet he believes Geletas was in or eround Clarkedele. A search at the Wes- tern Unidn revealed that a telegram had been sent from Clarksdale, Miesiss- ippi on January 9, 1933 addreseed to Mr. We A. Spear, 215 Orange Street, Hot Springs, arkansas, reading; “Have necessary Subject for big store heave them get in touch with me at once. {signed) Joe faker," The above quoted telegram beara all the earmarks of being a coded telegram from one con man to another telling him that he had a sucker ready to work on. Agente Brantley and anderson proceeded to Clarksdale, Misalasippi, I under- | stand, for the purpose of endeavoring to ascertain the source of this tele- _ grem, Informant "4" showed the writer where Spears lived and it turned out to be number 239 Orange Street. oo,
