OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE .
Endeavor to Deliver Federal Prison
Reference is made to Division wire of the first inatant,
instructing the writer to proceed to Los Angeles immediately and there
interview Ba° ‘Davis, 1.0. 1193, who was in custody with respect to
the "Kanmo” and other Division cases.
Accordingly, I arrived at Los Angeles, California, the
morning of March 2, 1934, and interviewed Ed. Davia in the presence of
Special Agent C. D. White of the Los Angeles Office. Upon arrival
at Los Angeles, however, I ascertained that Special Agent in Charge
Conroy of Kansas City, who was thoroughly familiar with Hi. pavis,
end his reported activities, had gone over in detail all matters with
Ed. Davis, in the presence of Special Agent White, and they are msitmitting
a Getafled report, and in order to avoid a repetition, I will simply give
you the highlights of my conversation with hin.
In the first place, Ed. Davis does not at all resemble the
indi viduel whan] saw at Kansas City. There is no question about thie
at all, I ascertained that Davia would probably warm up, ani be more
willing to talk if sympethy wes indicated for his wife and son, for fhm
he has the utmost devotion, and his reaction under these circumstances
was all thst could be expected. He stated positively that he was
mot in the Kansas City shooting at all; that when he escaped from the
lansing Penitentiary at Lansing, Kenses, he, Wilbur Underhill, Bob Brady,
Barvey Batley ani Jim-Clark drove the Warden in a car which they had
teken away from a guard near Lansing. He stated they immediately headed
South, and that he, Ed. Davis, has never been back in Missouri at all;
that he has been working through Oklahoma and Texes. At that time
Barvey Bailey's knee, where he had been shot, was bothering him, and a6
