2. Mr. Clege advisec me, while in Washington, that apperently some dissension had arisen between Special Agents vw. F, Trainor and A, E. Farland, who have both been sorking on the case, and who have developed more or less opposing theories. I have found that agent anderser eliminated this by inetructing Agent Farisnd to follow out his own leads, and by specifically directing all of the investigation himself. For the information of the Division, it may be noted thst Agent Trainor is practically indispensable in connection with future intestization. He has a most intimate knowledre of the massacre files, which sre most voluminous. He has worked lone hours and has the interest of the Division at heart in connection with this case. I realize that he may not have a balanced judgment at times, and that his efforts in the pust have occasicnally been sorerhat mis- directed. With Agent Andersen directing the investigation, horever, I feel cartein that agent Trainor's services will te extremely valustle. It will further te noted that Arent Farland has recently reguestec transfer to the New York City, or Fosten, office, in view of the illness of his mother. It is my under: tanding that such recuests 2re usually granted by the Divisicn. In this specific case, if the transfer is granted, there cannot possibly be any further friction tetween the two Agents in question. There has been a definite plan of prcecedure laid down in connecticn with the investigation of the massacre ¢sse, and I do not anticipate any particular disturbance over the handling of the same in the future. Trusting thet my views on this matter are in accord with those of the Division, I am Very truly yours, E. &. GONFOY SFiCIAL ACEIT I] CHARGE eec-c
