By communication dated March 5, 1974, the Dallas
Office of the FBI advised that between the hours of 7:00 Pw
and 12:45 AM, February 15, 1974, jewelry valued at $24,065,
belonging to LEE LIBERACE, a well-known nightclub and
television entertainer,was stolen from LIBERACE's suite
at the Statler-Hilton Hotel, Dallas, Texas, where he had
been registered since February 10, 1974. According to this
Dallas communication, at the time of this burglary, LIBERACE
was performing at the McFarland Hall Auditorium, Dallas,
Texas. The Dallas communication further related that
LIBERACE’s jewelry, prior to the theft, was maintained in
an aluminum suitcase equipped with a combination lock and
subsequent examination determined there was no forcible
entry into LIBERACE's suite or the metal suitcase. LIBERACE Ic

know the combination to this suitcase.
On April 8, 1974, U. S. Department of Justice
Attorney GREGORY WARD, assigned to the U. S. Attorney's
(USA's) Strike Force, NDI, Chicago, I nois, was contacted

Mr. WARD then prepared the necessary
documents for forwarding to the Attorney General (AG) of the
U.S, requesting authorization for the implemaentation of the
Provisions of Section 2518, Title 18, U. S. Code, for an
order of the court authorizing the FBI to intercept
wire communications and oral communications for a twenty
day period to and from the telephones bearing numbers
(312) 368-1647, (312) 368-1648, and (312) 368-1649, and
from the premises known as the Universal Gen and Jewelry
Company, Inc., located at 5 North Wabash, Suite 604,
Chicago, Illinois. On March 20, 1974, these documents were
forwarded to the Justice Department and on April 2, 1974,
the U. S. AG approved this request.
