TTA SMe ese ~~ . t t Fr : * “COALITION COE ERENCES San Francisco During a weekend in San Francisco one would expect to see women shopping, dining in leisure ‘and doing the usual touristy thing. Not so on September 27, 1969 when the Bay Area NOW Chapter initiated a co~ alition of women which was attended by representatives of 24 organizations in- cluding: TT Beational Organisation fer Vouen, Vosen*s Liberation, Weuan Poser, Vouen Inc., Vonen's Caucsas of the > Wonen for Pesce, Natiovel Begro Business and Pro-e Leesions. Bonen, Daughters of Bilitis, Wonen's Duresu of the U.S, Departzent of Labor, Delta Signs Theta Sorority, Soroptiaist Club of Sen Praneieco, Society for Busene Abortions, Cale Sforaia Institere of the Arts, Young Socialists Aiifance, Negro Miatorical and Cylturel Society, Stadent Mobilisation Courittee, Nexican-Azerican Political Association, Californie Cosrittee to Legalize Abortions, Aserican Association of Usi-~ warsity Vonen, Business and Professional Wosea, Wonen's Internstionsl League for Peace and Free~ don, and Socislist Yorkers Perty. Recognizing that differences of approach existed among the various organizations, - the meeting was designed to determine the general goals and purposes of each organi- gation and to delineate these areas of common interest around which the organiza- tions could develop cooperative programs. To lay the groundwork for the workshop discussions, representatives from a few of the organizations were asked to describe the programs of their groups. After the reports had been given the groups arrived at consensus to coordinate activities in support of the following programs: Consensus Items: , omenemainaammmetnd er 1, The need for child care centers as a community resource such as parks and li- _ braries for use by citizens regardless of economic status, 2, Establishing a continuing comunica- ¢ion network between women's organizations on issues pertinent to their membership and convening another coalition meeting within a few months. - 3. Promotion of women's caucuses in the unions, professions and political parties, 7. Declaration of the right of each woman to have control over her reproductive Life and abolition of all penalties for abor- tion, - 8B. The need to change women's self-image by bringing pressure to bear on mass media | and educational institutions which persist in portraying women as mindless sex objects. 9. Pledge of cooperation with Radio Sta- tion KPFA=Fa in relevant programming on wonene Syvacuse As this issue of NOW ACTS goes to press, the Syracuse Chapter of NOW is planning its second annual celebration of Susan B. Anthony's birthday on February 15, 1970. This year the chapter is bringing to- gether feminist leaders from the six cen- tral New York cities--Syracuse, Rochester, Utica, Ithaca, Buffalo and Albany for a conference on political action. The cen- tral New York conference will stress: a.) political action, b.} women in the mass nedia, and c.) discrimination in employ- nent, New work Everyone knows that “women axe incapable of decisive agreement” yet this became one more exposed myth when more than 500 women from the eastern states met in New York City in November to set up a Congress to unite women. These women not only came to agreement, but also followed through with plans for establishing a Continuing Commit- ee, .
