that no decision regariing the subject's passport had been
reached at that time.

advised him that at an informal hearing on May 29, 1957,
the subject had refused to submit an affidavit under current
passport regulations, refused to answer questions relating
to Communist Party membership, refused to answer questions

affairs of Communist Party front organizations in the
United States, refused to answer questions concerning close
association with Communist functionaries in the United States
and abroad and refused to answer questions or offer an
explanation of his activities abroad in support of the
Communist movement. Subject was notified by this letter

being withheld until such time as he would be willing to
