informal hearing held on May 29, 1957. Mr. BOUDIN pointed out
that subject had indicated in his passport application that he
desired to travel to England, France, Czechoslovakia, Israel,
and the Scandinavian countries for the purpose of singing and
acting. Mr. BOUDIN stated that the purpose of his sending
this letter to the Passport Office is to advise that the subject
has recently received an invitation from the Shakespeare .
Memorial Theatre to act in "Pericles" in England during the 1958
season. Mr, BOUDIN requested that since the matter of the
right of an individual to refuse to answer questions in the
passport application with respect to matters of past political
assoclations,is one currentiy before the United States Supreme
Court, consideration be given to issuing subject a limited -
passport restricted to his trip to England for the purpose of
rehearsal and playing in "Pericles." Mr. BOUDIN stated it was
necessary that subject accept this offer to appear in "Pericles"

United States Supreme Court's decision in related cases.
Enciosed with Mr. BOUDIN's letter, was a letter from
GLEN BYAM-SHELW, Shakespeare Kemorial Theatre, Stratforton-Avon,
England, dated November 22, 1957, offering subject the part of
GOVER in "Pericies" and advising subject that he would be expected
to start rehearsing in England on June 9, 1958, and to remain
in England until the end of the season on Novenber 29, 1958.
On January 17, 1958, the Passport Office replied to
My. BOUDIN's letter of Becember 10, 1957, stating that the
Pepartment of State deems it necessary that the subject gnswer
the questions with respect to Communist Party mmbership before
consideration could be given to his request for passport facilities.
On January 31, 1958, Mr. BOUDIN sent another letter to
the Passport Office, advising that subject had received an offer
from the HaroldDavidson, Limited, Theatrical Band and Concert
Agency, London,’ England, offering subject two major television
shows, one on April 6, 1958, entitled "Sunday Night at the
Pallidium," and the other on April 12, 1958, entitled, "The
Paul Robeson Show," Wr. BOUDIN again requested that consideration
be given toward issuing subject a limited passport.
On February 10, 1958, the Passport Office advised ur.
EOUDIN that the Department of State has reconsidered this matter
in light of the facts presented and perceives no reason to modify
