FG 200-9855 DETAILS: I, EFFORTS OF PROMOTER TO OBTAIN CONCERT HALL, AT PITTSBURGH, PA, FOR PAUL ROBESON CONCERT SCHEDULED APRIL 21, 95 The "Sun-Telegraph, © a Pitteburgh, Pa, daily newspaper, March 33, 195c, issue, page three, column four, contained an article entitled, "Paul Robeson 'Steal-in' Folled Here,* which set forth in part that the board of managers of . Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall foiled what was described as an attempt to let commmist sympathizer PAUL ROBESON *steal" into the hall for a concert; that Superintendent GILBERT ¢, GLOONAN atated an. advertising man had released publicity that ROBESON would sing at the Ushers Alliance program April 2] but that they contacted the Ushers Alliance which advised that they had voted down ROBESON as a singer for their program because of his political affiliations, ~ "the Pittsburgh Press," a Pittsburgh, Pa. daily newspaper, April 1, 1958, issue, page if, columns one and two, contained an articleemtitied, "Use of Hall is Refused to Singer Robeson Rere," which set forth that a contract for the use of Soldiers and Sailors Memoral Hall, Pittsburgh, on Monday, April 21, 2958, for the appearance of PAUL ROPESON had been cancelled the preceeding day by GILBERT C. CLOONAN, Superintendent of the buliding. This article set forth that CLOONAN, in a letter to newspapers, announced that the lease which had been obtained by a private promoter wags ordered returned on the grounds that the "facts are not consistent with the memorial character of the building and ne mention had been made of Robeson's appearance there," "The Pittsburgh Press," April 1, 1958, tasue, page eight, column one, carried an article entitled, "Rebeson Geta Church Offer for Concert," which set forth that Dr. CHASES R.“GORDON, Minister of St, Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church, Sewickley, Pa., extended an invitation to ROBESON to appear at his church, This article set forth that Dr. GORDON emphasized that he is not in agreement with the political views of ROBESON, 8 staunch admirer of the Soviet Union, but that he respects his rights to be heard ag a concert artist.
