by the Communist newspaper "L'Humanite" at Meudon, France,
on September 5, 1959. This article stated that some
50,000 people were in attendance at this festival to see |
and hear ROBESON. According to this article, ROBESON sang
"Waterboy", "Caatros Generales", "Old Man River", "John Brown's
Body" and the Soviet "Bong of the Partisans”. he article
reflected that ROBESON talked to the spectators "about music
and wine and peace, about China and France and America, about
Shakespeare and Racine, about history and the future. He
said a few words in French, switched over to English, sang
Beethoven's *Ode to Joy' in German, sang a little Chinese
= song, explained the humor of a delightful Yiddish song on
a his program, and just before the end, recited a poem in
