The United States Department of State, American
Legation, Edinburgh, Scotland, made informtion available
on May 3, 1960, which reflected that PAUL ROBESON was
at the annual "gala Day" assembly of the Scottish
Miners N.U.M.
This information reflected that the » Botta
Miners of the N.U.M. celebrated May Day with their annual
“Gala Day" parade and picnic held in the grounds of
Holyrood Park. An estimated 20,000 people attended,
inchiing a delegation of thirty Russian miners. —
PAUL ROBESON was in the front rank of the parade
sharing honors with the MOFFATT brothers (well known
Communist leaders of the Scottish miners) and with
WILLIAM PAYNTER, General Secretary of the N.U.M. Following
the parade at the large open air assembly area ROPRESON
sang and addressed the gathering.
The main theme of the parade, as evidenced by
banners and floats was racial discrimination in Africa and
there was some moderate display of protest banners on the
nuclear bomb. As always the parade and assembly were
orderly and after the speech making was finished the crowd
settled down to picnicking on the grounds.
ROBESON was not separately interviewed by the
press and received about the same attention from it
as would any featured speaker at such a gathering. —
