NY 100-25857 - The "Scotsman" °'the Edinburgh daily newspaper gave the above occasion little coverage. However, the ‘Evening News" of Edinburgh gave some prominence to - ROBESON's attendance at the miners' Gala and states that he received a great ovation from thousands of miners and their families when he reaffirmed his friendship for the Soviet Union. After quoting ABE MOFFAT's tribute to ROBESON "this great man, this great artist, and this great fighter for freedom" the following excerpts from ROBESON's speech are featured:- "You have made, and are making, such a fine ~*~ contribution to the struggles of this land. You will need all the strength you have got to see that you who create the wealth of the country have a chance to enjoy at. "I have been very close to the miners and the workers of the Soviet Union. On this historic day and at this historic time we must find peace and friendship in the world, and how wonderful it is to find here these representatives of the arts and the people of the U.S.S.R. joining in this gala. I am intensely proud. I have been and always will be a firm and unswerving friend of the Soviet people and people from Soviet lands. "My people, my father, my relatives were hewers of wood and drawers of water all over the Western world. To-day again, we are seeing it is time for us to live a new life, a time to free the land again.' The "Evéning Dispatch" gave the most prominent cover- age with a feature picture on the front page, showing ROBESON surrounded by miners. The same excerpts from his speech are quoted in this paper.
