NY 100-25857 ye ae letter to Director RE: PAUL ROBESON OF toe ae ee Re) cory ewes GR ee a a YERGAN further advised that the letter had baen construed by the Accountatsfor the COUNCIL that contributims for the COUNCIL were also deductible, but timt the matter was now pending and they were expecting ee ee ee ee. a nn rt ae ett 40 OP1ni0n Lrom US J8nyYOrs 10F We WALL Le Wn wsar eK Kl] == 4SD0AN Woot Gi vl BULLE ROCKMORE that many people had made contributions to the COUNCIL and were deducting thase contributions on their Income Tar returns, ROCKMORE stated that while dedutions were not allowable for con- tributions to organizations engaged for political or propaganda work, that — he would contest the decis fon in an effort to help the cause of the QCOUNCIL. ieation. we re oe He further stated that he was fearful that the deduction was dis- allowed bacausa the people in Washington had their ow dossier on the organ- YERGAN promised ROCKMORE he would send him a copy of the letter which the COUNCIL had received from the Revenue Department in order that he could use it es a basis for his contest in the matter, On the sama date, the Informant advised that MAX YERGAN conferred with his Secretary, DIANNE;SOMMERS and requested her to send a copy of the letter which hes had discussed with ROCKMORE. she had not heard from the lawyer employed by the COUNCIL amd that the conr of the letter was in his possession. DIANNE advised YERGAN that She said that she would obtain the copy and forwardit to ROCKMORE immediately. The foregoing information is being forwarded to the Bureau and it is suggested that the information be transmitted to the Office of the Collector of Intarnal Revenue in connection with the PAUL ROBESON matter and also in connection with the situation which now exists with respect to the deductions allowed for contributions to the (COUNCIL ON AFRICAN AFFAIRS.
