ADAMS SUBJECT! bove individual, who is on the Special Correspondents’ List, by — , letter to the Director dated 4-11-69, has requested information as to why ; President Nixon was not afforded an appointment to the Special Agent position. Purpose of this memorandum is to review the matter of President Nixon's | application for the position of Special Agent and to recommend that the : proposed attached communication to be approved. uy’ na letter he suggests that if there was an innocuous reason for Mr. Nixon's rejection for the Special Agent position we furnish it to the World Book Encyclopedia with a request that they in turn pass it on to the purchasers of all 1969 Yearbooks. He is obviously referring to a comment appearing in the 1969 World Book Yearbook Annual Supplement which among other things mentions that upon graduation from Duke ‘= Law School —— Mr. Nixon tried unsuccessfully to join the FBI.’ Awd a hedetri- Bureau files disclose that Mr. Nixon submitted an application for the Special Agent position under date of 4-23-37. He was recommended favor-. .. ably. Shortly after receipt of the related papers dealing with Mr. Nixon's application, the Bureau submitted a letter to the Department recommending that Mr. Nixon be approved for an appointment to the position of Special Agent. This was approved by the Department and our letter returned to us. In the Se meantime, investigation had been instituted. A brief of the investigation of utr. Nixon was prepared under date of 8-10-37 and a review of the investi- 2 gation disclosed that it was entirely favorable.
