It developed that the constituents of :.: heard
rumors,to the effect that yarious members of the Purple Gang, especially one
“of thejBernsteins, were in New Orleans for a conference with membars of the
State inistration, for the purpose of sither assisting the State Adminiatra-~
tion in the primary election on January 21, 1936, or to become connected with
' the policy racket or the slot mechine racket, the latter being in open activity
at New Orleans.
It appeared that the aforenamed gentlemen desired investigstion to
_ determine whether(members of the Purple Gang were in New Orleans, either to be
placed as supernumeraries on the New Orleans Police Department for election
matters ar tr haanm connected with the gambling interests.

definite information of a violation over which this Bureau would have investi-
gative jurisdiction, no active investigation could be instituted at the present
time, but that the writer would be glad to recelva a list of members of gy
