article entitled "NAACP Urges Veto." The article indicated
that Roy Wilkins had sent Governor Harrinan a telegran from
the NAACP, urging the Governor to veto ao tll passed hy the
Legislature, setting up a civil rights bureau in the office

carried anarticle on page 61, datelined New York, 3-31-57,
which was entitled: "NAACP Requests Witness’ Status." The

asking for clarification of what, tf any, position was held
by Manning Johnson tn the Department of Justice. According
to the article, Johnson, a Negro and former connuntst, had
accused the NAACP of comnunist ties at a hearing tn-heartag
tn Louisiana. In his letter, Wilkins cited newspaper accounts
which identified Johnson as"Director of Research for the
Departnent of Justice." Wilkins said one such account had
heen inserted in the Congressional Record.
