The references disclosed that during the period of 1/4/64 to 4/16/66, Wilkins continued his "zo slow" approach to the civil rights movement for which he was de- nounced by CP members and Martin Luther King. Wilkins, however, crit- icized the Senate for needless delay in the passage of the Civil Rights Bill. Informants were aware of the friction between Wilkins and King and indicated a possible split between the two leaders following Wilkins' public denunciation of King and James Farmer. ’ In connection with his travels, the references revealed that Wilkins spoke at Atlanta, Ga., on 6/3/64, and met with President Johnson on 8/16/64, in Washington, D.C. A second meeting with Presi- dent Johnson was planned for 8/19/64, which included other civil rights eaders.
