Service 4/26/64 a -A "NY Times” 8/10/64 p.1 yd a a memor service for Medgar Evers, brother of Charles Evers (157-937), which was held on 6/12/66, at the Masonic Temple, 1072 Lynch Street, Jackson, Miss. During the service, Charlea Evers announced that he would continue as NAACP Field Secretary for the State of Mississippi. Informant stated that, in his opinion, the problems between Wilkins and Evers had been resolved and that Wilkins and the NAACP Board realized that Evers could be a political asset in the future. 157-937 -34 (sy a The following references in the file captioned "Racial Mat- ters" contain information concerning the numerous activities of Roy Wilkins from 3/29/64 to 6/12/66, relating to his position of leader- ship in the NAACP. During this period of time, Wilkins was active in the establishment and promotion of demonstrations of a peaceful nature and generally took a moderate stand on civil rights issues. Wilkins’ speeches dealt primarily with voter registration, school segregation and Civil Rights legislation in Congress. Wilkins was observed at rallies, generally as a speaker, and at memorial services for civil rights participants who had met with violence. . Following the riots in the large northern cities in 1964, Wilkins requested the Department of Justice to initiate a full scale investigation of the riots, due to his suspicion that outside influ- ences were involved. ae In connection with his activities, Wilkins visited NYC; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago, Il1.; Casper, Wyoming; Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.; and Hattiesburg and Jackson, Miss. 4 (continued )
