This would prevent the white press from going to these jeaders| for statements from the black community and would force the white people to deal with the real leaders of the black people, such as ' herself. 100-439190-1328 encl.p.3 The 7/15/67 edition of "The Courier - Journal” (94-8-10), Louisville, Ky., carried an editorial captioned "The Tydings Ouster Is Part Of a Disturbing Pattern! According to this editorial, the failure of public officials to respond to the justified grievances of Negroes was causing such relatively conservative Negro leaders as Roy Wilkins to déspair. Wilkins stated that Congress's refusal to pass open- housing legislation and other needed civil rights bills was “creating tk atmosphere" for violence. Copy of above editorial enclosed 94-8-10-200 encl.p.2 On 7/16/67 during an appearance on the television program, {4 "Meet The Press," (94-38139) Roy Wilkins stated that he did not condone _ outbursts of violence by the Negroes; however, he felt that until Negro: _ were able to obtain better jobs, improved housing and economic security. ’ the threat of violence would remain imminent.
