Sub-Committee Chairman, who stated thet the Sub-Committee received @
mandate from the Senate woich contained the authority to investigate a
hear charges cf disloyalty against the government by employees of the
Denertrent of State and other such agencies against whom cherges have
been heard and to subpoena the loyalty files against all such persons.
Senator JUSSPH BR. HeCARTHY was svorn in as the first witnes

McCAPT:Y in which Sunstor McCaA THY had stated on the floor of the Senate
that one employce of the State Department who was employed in December
1045 45 a Translator ind been investigated during 1946 and thet this
investigation snowed evidence which caused his - “later dis:tissal due to
homo-sexual acts xvi connection with the Young Comaunist League. He
furthr stated tht on Janu:ry 22, 1946 the Division of Security and
Investigations, State Department, * recommended the discharge of this
individual and on February 19, 1546 his services were terminated. on
April 1, 1946 this termination act was rescinded. §enator HecARTHY's
tes tamony showed that there was a CSA report dated September 27, 1947
which was replete with information tlt a high official of the State
Department tampered with the records of the State Department and |
personally contactsd witnesses and asked them to retract their testi mony
concerning the aforemontioned employee. Senator TYDINGS then asked
