$920 CONGRESSIONAL KECORD—SENATE
I used the names on the floor of the
Seuute.
Some members of the press also asked
if their yewspapers could get the in-
‘formation I said, ‘Yes: if your euitor
“will simpli} tell me that he wants to
, use the names, he can have them,”
I
‘received no calls from any editors.
That should, I hope, lay at rest once
>and for all the silly, asinine claim that
: A Senator can expose currupuen or com-
ch,

lnanisin, somewhere other than on the
Sena.e floor cr before a committee. Tf

those within the rau.e of his voice. If

“have the information about these can-
ferous characters.
Tine next one is Daniel FP. Markoliss,
ore of the top seeunity nich im the State
Doworiument, Orvisginally the appeint-
otnent of this man wan divayproved on
the grouna that he was a bad lovaliy
and security risk. He was hired any-
Tie next mame is that of Nobert Wrr-
ren Earnett. This is one of the men who
was brought into the Siste Department
on the reccmmencation of the Institute
of Facific Melations. Edward Carter
vestified ta that the other day. He has
been active in ihe Institute for a@ number
of vears.
Tre letter of charses against the Bar-
nelts—both Robert Warren Barnett and
his wife, bivs. Rebert Warren Barnett,
Charges them witn close association and
comstant contact wilh known Soviet es-
Pionaze activity. :
The next is Sylvia Schimmel, an ad-
munistrative analyst in the Dopartment
of State. The letter of charges in her
case is briefer, but substantially the same
as that in the case of the Barnetts.
The next is Philip Rainer, a rerional
specialist in the Department of State,
He is tied up, im the letter of charges,
very closely with Robert T. Miller, who
has been identified under oath several
times a8 a Russian espionage agent,
he next is Gertrude Cameron, infor-
mation and editorial specialist in the De-
partment of State. I recommend this
case especially to the McCarran com-
Tiittee.
The next is Paul A. Lifantic#-Lee, an
economist in the Department of Strate.
He was born in Russia. His file in the
Navy Department, which was trans-
mitied to the State Department, shows
that he took secret State Department
documents, which were found in his
room and picked up by naval intelli-
genee, Yhatis shown by the naval in-
tellgence report:
The next name in Franz Leopold Neu-
mann, a consultant in the Department of
Brate.
The next is John Tipton Fishburn,
jJabor economist in the Department of
State.
The next is Vietor Myron Hunt, in
the Cflice of Educational Exchange, De-
partment of State.
The next is Arpad Erdos. He is an
Informatcn speciahs. in the Depart-
menvof St.de. For scnec dine bids mun
was With the Voice of America, but he
was promoted, and now has a higher-
paid jok,
The next is an editor-writer by the
name of Frances M, Tuchscher.
The next is Nelson Chipchin, a radio
information specialist. This is another
case that I recommend especially to the
McCarran committee.
The next is Esther Less, also known 45
Esther Less Kopclewich, an announcer
in the Department of State.
The next is Esther Caukin Brunauer,
United States representative to the Pre-
paratory Commission of UNESCO, De-
partment of State.
The next is John Patton Davies. In-
cidentally, since I wrote the State De-
partment, Davies has been cleared, de-
spite the vast amount of infermation
on his communistic activities. I under-
stand he is being promoted and sent to
Bevin te act as adviser to McCioy.
One final phase, the prize of them al,
atainst whom charges are now bending,
is Philip C. Jessup. The history of this
man Jessup is so unusual that I assume
some day we shall leok back and say:
“No: it is impossible. ne Statue De-
partment certainly would not have
given this man the top job that he had
over in Paris, negotiating with the Rus-
sians even as Hiss in a Jess important
eapacity did the nesotiating at Yalta.”
I am not going to take much 71 the
Senute’s time on this case. Io wish
ricAy to go throush some of the mnte-
rial Lhave in my hand. Testin.eny was
Riven by Jessup on two different occe-
sions, the oceasiun of the first trial of
Aleer Hiss. and the second trial.
Mr, MUNDT. My. President, wil the
Senator, yield?
Mr. McCARTHY. I yield.
Mr. MUNDT. I notice on the list
read by the Senator the name of Esther
Caukin Brunauer. It seems to me that
I recall reading in the newspeper that
she had been removed, along with her
huskhund, from Government emyploy-
ment. Am I correct in my recolicction?
Mr. McCARTHY,. I understand that
two of the individuals were suspended.
They are Brunauer and Val R. Lorwin,
the economist in the State Department,
The information is to the effect that
they are still on the payroll of the State
Department, pending inquiry. Mrs,
Prunauer’s husband, Stephen Brunauer,
was employed in the Navy Department
as head of the High Explosives Section,
He wus named before the Tydings ecm-
mittee Jast year. The Senator will re-
member that I asked the Tydincs com-
mittee to go into executive session and
take up his case. They refused to do so,
They said, ‘No, Brunaucr has been
cleared by the Loyaliy Board, and we
will not let you smear him.”
Former &ecretary Matthews did a
pretty good job in the case. He took ail
the cvidence against Brunauer and sus-
pended Brunauer. Brunauer would not
wait until his ease had been decided, out
resigned,
I may say, Mr. President, that
Brunauer was a very close friend of Nool
Field, who, since the Tydinzs heariu: of
last year, has disappearcad behind te
iron cursain. How amuny of Eso. 8
