In fact, the Senate Armed | Services Committee bas proj! igcked in its files that Senp- tor McCarthy once unwitting wotked with a Communist rig to undermine the American oc- ecupation of Germany. McCarthy ~came out with sensational charges that the Army had tor- tured German war criminals. These charges were cooked up in Germany and mailed to Me- Carthy in brown manila enve- lopes. However, McCarthy carelessly misplaced one of these envelopes and ieft it in the Senate Armed Services Committee's hearing room. This envelope centained the return address of Rudolf Aschenauer of Frankfurt, Germany, in the upper left corner. Army in- tefigence officers identifi henauer as a member of munist ring, which p ed the trumped-up charg¢/s for McCarthy, then circulated many to stir up anti American; he could boast confidently | McCarthy's speeches in Ger-' he knew it was not true—until feeling. len Army were investigated by a Senate committee, headed by former Sen. Ray Baldwin (R- Conn.}. At the end of the hear- ings, Baldwin angrily summed up: “More than 100 unarmed surrendered American soldiers were brutally shot down in cold blood by German SS troopers. To this day, not one has been executed for this crime. They have been tried and convicted. There have already been several reviews by the Army... Yet oddly enough, Senator Me- i Carthy has been quick to accept and espouse the affidavits made iby convicted German war criminals some two years after the completion of their trials He has in the meantime on numerous occasions stated that he believed American officers testifying under oath were not telling the truth.” Shouting back, McCarthy | warned that Baldwin would - “bitterly regret this deliberate and very clever atten to whitewash.” 4 Senator McCarthy has dis. regarded American principles of justice and fair play in attacking his victims. Senator Benton has nearly 100 pages of examples of how McCarthy has deliberately lied in his pursuit of headlines instead of facts. For example, McCarthy charged that Owen Lattimore was the “chief archi- tect of our Far Eastern policy.” is was denied by al) the living retaries of State since 1933, o pointed out that Lattimore d never even worked for the : te Department. Yet Me- Carthy continued in the same charge—even the Senate: “I believe you can Carthy's charges against | 28k almost any schoo! child wip the architect of our Far Faste policy is, and he will 3 ‘Owen Lattimore’.” Financial Sleight-of-Hand §. Senator McCarthy's ethics, ‘alone, are enough to disqualify ‘him from a seat in the Senate., For example, McCarthy once boasted to Sen. Clinton Ander- enn (DN, MM) that he Alan naw wes Qaees aedey RE UE Tb pay income taxes on all his lecture B. “You never heard of a United States Senator going to jail for income-tax violation,” McCarthy sbrugged. In 1943, McCarthy neglected te report $42,000 income in his Wis- consin tax returns. He argued that he had been cut of State, hence was not a citizen of Wis- consin. Yet at the same time, he held office as a Wisconsin State judge. In 1944, McCarthy listed $18,000 in contributions from his father, brother, and brother-in- law. Yet his father didn't have enough income to file a return that year, and neither his broth- er nor brother-in-law claimed more than $2000 income. The mystery of the $18,000 {s still unsolved. McCarthy was also paid $10,000 by the Lustron Corp. for a housing pamphiet at a time when Lostron was 32 million dollars in debt to the Government and needed friends in the Senate. Yet the pamphiet was chiefiv the work of Walter Royall of the Housing and Home Finan Agency, who is paid by the ta payers. McCarthy officially ob quested Royall to do the + search. ~ gh | (coprrisht, 190d. The Bell Sradicate. Inc.)
