BACKGROUND # A nemorandum of the Director dated March 17, 1954, reflects that the Deouty Attorney General, at a conference on that datey advised that on Warch 16, 1954, the Deputy Attorney General had visited with Senator Fulbright relative to Senater Fulbright's stutement that it was his opinion that the FRI was furnishing infornation from its confidential files to Senator HeCarthy's Committee, Senator Fulbright gave the Deputy Attorney General a clipping which appeared in the "Boston Herald” for Mondays March 15, 1954, which reads in part as fellows: "About 150 persons attended the New England Anti- Subversive Seminar of the Anerican Legton at Gardner A Vitor m State House, yeasaternonve ern tea Bu ; f t eae afte ie ey RF ee fudge pow eh se "They heard Alfred Kohlberg, publisher of ‘Plain Talk! declare the ‘we shall go on losing the cold war if the diplomats seft on Comnunism remain in the State Department,! "tl have seen FBI files on Several persons still \y operating in the department,’ he said. 'They are “net Comnuntsts, but they take a fovorable atti tude ‘toward then, '™ The Pirector tnatructed that Kohlberg be immediately interviewed for any facts which would support the statement which he te quoted as having nade at Boston an March 14, 1954, and that a memorandum be prepared on this matter for the Deputy Attorney Generel who intends to show it to Senator Fulbright.
