Humphrey was tentatively scheduled to speak at the annual convention of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference on August 8, 1966, i ackson, Mississippi. Johnson, co-chairman of the Planning Committee for the convention. Reverend Johnson advised he had been told by Martin Luther King that Vice President Humphrey would not appear in Jackson as a speaker at the convention on August 8, 1966, but that he, King, had selected Senator Kennedy to be the principal speaker.
