“which indicated that on that date Martin tether King held a
discussion with Clarence Jones regarding the March on Washington.
One matter discussed was the making of a record album which would
contain the speech made by Martin Luther King at the March on
Washington. This discussion also included how the proceeds
from this record would be distributed. Jones indicated that he
felt that the proceeds should go to the three civil rights
groups equally and that King should discuss this matter with
A. Phillip Randolph (head of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car
Porters) before he entered into an agreement with RCA, because
the other groups would think that King was trying to capitalize
on the March for the benefit of the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC) or for himself, Both men agreed however, that
King and the SCLC would make much more money if they had the
album exclusively . They also agreed that the People would buy
the album because of King's speech and therefore it would not be
fair to split the money among the other organizations. It was
also agreed that King would be in a difficult position in
discussing this point with Randolph and that therefore Jones.
should discuss this matter with Randolph.
