A confidential source, who has furnished reliable information in the past, learned on June 17, 1968, that on that da Stanley Levison was in contact with Congressman JO onyers of Michigan, whom he had met at the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr., President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Levison noted that he had been informed that Conyers recently held a meeting of 100 black political leaders and that Conyers was pushing ahead with this organization. ; he ss Gonyers questioned whether Levison was referring to the National Committee of Inquiry and Levison said that he was. Levison told Conyers that he had developed and has maintained the SCLC mail appeal for the past eight years, which realized close to $600,000.00 while King was alive. He felt it should be easy to raise a quarter of a million dollars on a regular basis for the type of committee Conyers is organizing.
