Atracking dog traced Bundy’s trail to the Roaring Fork River near the courthouse, where a group of young boys said they had scen a inan who fit Bundy’s description cross the river. ' The Pitkin County Sheriff's Depart- ment confirmed that Bundy was left unguarded during a recess in the court proceedings. Sheriff Dick Kienast had no comment on why Bundy was not muy fi oat being guarded when he escaped. “When everyone returned to court following the break, it was asked where was Mr. Bundy,” said Undersherilf Ben Myers. “Tt was at that time that we disco vered him missing.” Just later, officials were told a passerby reported, ‘Someone just jumped out of a window. Is that normal?” Bundy, 29, has been charged with first-degree murder in the 1975 slayin cf a Dearborn, Mich.. Campbell.
