_ SF 94-2296 THE/dic For the information of Boston, the Zodiac killings involve a series of brutal murders committed primarily in the San Francisco region beginning in 1968. The killer sent several letters to the police and press "claiming" these killings and Siving details of the killings known only to the killer and investigators. Most of these letters contained cryptic symbols and codes. Unsuccessful attempts to "break" these codes and “ Symbols have been made by numerous agencies, including the National Security Agency, and private citizens. The last authentic Zodiac letter was received in 1974 and in it, Zodiac Claimed “Zodiac 37, Police 0." New West provided the enclosed documents to FBI, San Francisco ? upon advice of the USA, Los Angeles, to New West's attorney, Qa who is als San Francisco was requested . to attempt to determine whether or not QM has broken the Zodiac's code. “Copies of the enclosed documents were provided to Inspector David Toschi, San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) on 5/19/81. Toschi advised he is aware that Qi haa previously tried to sell - the article to the San Francisco Chronicle, but it had been rejected after analysis by that newspaper. Toschi is the original investigator of the SFPD assigned the Zodiac case; however, it is noted that Toschi was the author of lettérs to the Chronicle in 1979 which purported to be from the Zodiac. Toschi actually wrote the 1979 letters himself to get additional publicity for the case. Napa County, California, Sheriff's Office, was contacted on 5/20/81 and advise is a free-lance writer with whom he has had considerable contact. GMD is the son of a deceased official of the State of California Department of Justice and apparently acquired an interest in“the Zodiac case several years ago from his father. has arrived at various solutions to the Zodiac case in the past, all of which including the present "solution," have been discounted >y who has been asSigned the Zodiac killings which occurred in apa County. ae ae : For the information of the Bureau, on 5/19/81 the Boston Office received a com laint from who made available a copy of a 21 page manuscript and other post cards, letters and unsoljci j n the Zodiac theme.
