two factions and to report to the National YWAACP, New York, con-

The Cleveland Press on March 13, 1946, stated that
the Cleveland branch of the NAACP and o Citizens' Connittee
were sponsoring a protest mass meeting agatnet the "ugly race
situation” tn Columbia, Tennessee. The meeting was to be held
on March 15 and among the speakers was Thurgood Mershall
EE (reported Communist Party member
Communtat Party sympathizer),
of the Communtst Party, and others.
On April 10, 1947, ET ate a Special
Agent in Austin, Tezas, that he was trying to set up a NAACP
chapter at the University of Teras, and thot certain individuals
who fol he Communtst Party line were trying to get control
of tt. ontacted Thurgood ¥Yoraehall, who said that tf
any offtce of a NAACP chapter was held by a Communist the chap-
ter would be withdrawn.
A confidenttal informa of the New York Office ad-
vised on August 22, 1947, that of the
» Daily Yorker, sent the following telegram on August 21, 1947,
to Thurgood Larshall and numerous other parties:
"Have you seen QE brief in@EP cose cand
will you comment for publi cotion tn our paper?”
4 confidential informant of the New York Office re-
ported thet Marshall ita a pood friend of Var Yergon, Erecutive
Director of the Council on Afrtcan affaires, President of the
National Wegro Congresa, and a key ftgure in known Communtat
etreles. The same informant termed Morsholl as a "fellow
traveler" and added that he moy posstbly be a member of the
Communtet Farty.
