Allegation:
In hia letter of December 27, 1946, tc the Attorney Genera
Marshall commented as follows with regard to this case: "In the
beating of by Cfficer tn Batesburg, South Caro-
dina, we were able to produce eye witnesses and the name of the
police officer." Marshall was, of course, contrasting the alleged
difficulty cf the FEF tn solving this and similar cases with the
ecse with which the NAACP located witnesses.

Marshall's statement is misleadinc, to say the least, but
the FBI did interview all persons sugoested by the NAACP and gave
their tinformetion to the ogovernment attorneys. It ta to be noted
