The following story of what I observed over the Cascade mountains, as immossibls as it my seer, is positively true. I never asked nor wanted envy noteriety for just accidontly beinz in the right spot st the right time to observe whet I did. J reported somethin= thet IT know any nilot would havea reported. JI don't think thet in any way ny observation was due to any sensivity of eve sich. or judgment then what is considered normal for any ot. Cn June 24th, Tuesday, 2947, I hed finished my work for the aml, |; am -+ Chehalis, “ashineton, and at about two otelock Itmok off from L Chehalis, “ashincton, airport with the intention of going to Yakima, Wash. “vy trip was delayed for en hour to search for e large marine transport that supposedly went down near or around the southwest side of Ht. Rainier in the state of Veshington and to date has never been found. I flew diractly toward "t. Rainier after reachinr en altitude of about 9,500 feet, which is ths anproximate elevation of the hich plateau from which te Teinier rises. I had made one sweep of this hirh plateau to the westward, searchin~ all of the verious ridsss for this marine ship and flew to the west down end near ths ride side of the canyon where Ashford, Washington, is located. Un-ble to see nnvthine that looked like the lost ship, I made a 360 degree turn to the richt and sbove the little city of Mineral, starting again toward Nts Reinier. I climbed back un to en altitude of approximately 9,200 feet. The air was so smooth that day that it was a real pleasure flying and, as most rilots do when the air is smooth and they are flying at a higher altitude, I trimmed out my airplane in the direction of Yakima, Washington, which was elmost directly east of my position and simply sat in my plane ob- © servinre the esky end the terrain. Thore was @ DC-4 to the left and to the rear of me approximately fifteen “lles distances, and I should judre, at 14,000 foot elevation. The sky and air was as clear as crystal. I hadn*t flown more than two or three minutes on my course when a bright flash reflected on my airplenee It startled me es I thoucht I was too close to some other air= erafte IJ looked every place in the sky and couldn't find where the reflec- tion had come from until I lcoked to tha left end the north of ‘t. Rainier . where I observed a chain of nine peculiar looking aircraft flyinr from north to south at asproximately 9,500 feet elevation and going, seeminrly, in a definite direction of about 170 derrees. They wera appronchine “'t. Rainier very rapidly, and I merely assumed they ware jet planes. Anyhow, I discovered that this was where the reflec- tion had come from, es two or three of them every few seconds would dip or change {cir courso slirhtly, just enouch for the sun to strike them at an anzle thet reflected brightly on my plana. Tics2 objects being quite far awe::, I wes unable for a few seconds to make out their shape or their forsetion. Very shortly they approached Mt. Rainier, end I observed their outline ereinst the snow quite pleinly. , I thoutht it was very veculiar thot T couldn't find their tails but assumed they wore som> tims of jst plana. J was determined to clock their seegd, ra DT hed two definit: nointes J enuld clock them by; the air was so clear thet, it was worry easy to see objects end determine their approximate yy sippe anil sige et almost fifty miles thet day. I vecanher distinetly thet my sweep second hand on my eight day clock, which is loceted on my instrument ranc]l, read one minute to 3 P.'. as the i first obiect of this formetion oassed the southern edre of lit. Rainiors I watches’! these objects with rent interest as I had never before observed
